Q: British Isle tour in May. Does the UK [London/Scotland] take American Express? Best credit card to use? Help!?
I would sorely appreciate as many tips as possible. I’ve always wanted to go to London, [I'm from the states!].

A: I guess American Express would be all right for London. In general, Visa and Master Card are much more common in Europe than American Express.

I’ve never seen a place that accepts Visa, but not Master Card, or vice versa; usually shops accept either both of these, or no credit cards at all. I have been told that there are rural areas in Scotland where Visa is better than Master Card, but I don’t know whether that’s true.

For information on travel in Britain, check the official British tourism website: http://www.visitbritain.com (also: http://www.visitlondon.com)
Always check out the National Trust as well: http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/main

I’ve got to log off now; please feel free to browse through my Q&A’s via my profile, to see many threads, links, and suggestions for London and the rest of the UK.

Q: isn’t it great to be a free american, where we all express our opinions, and answers on a device like this ! ?
don’t you hope our country remains free and strong for years to come, its our kids and their kids, its our country! in spite of our different oppions and such,i love every one of you very much> i served 2 tours in vietnam right or wrong i did my duty> bless our nation!

A: It is great to be an American and to express ourselves freely.
Thanks for serving our country!!

Q: Singer in American Express commercial?
It’s very new, and at the beginning she says something like, “I spend half my time on stage or on tour,” I’m not very sure though. I couldn’t make out her name from her signature, it might’ve started with an N? Please help, thanks!
Don’t say it’s ALICIA KEYS, because it’s not her.

A: I was trying to find that out myself and it is Nicole Atkins.

Q: do guys in Spain like touring American girls?
just wondering lol, im going on a class trip there in June and someone told me the guys in Spain aren’t afraid to express themselves and find American girls attractive. is it just the ones with blonde hair and blue eyes or is it all? haha just wondering

A: Well if you’re pretty you’ll get attention anywhere. A lot of men especially from the southern parts of Europe find women with fairer features more curious, because they aren’t so common there and some find them overall more attractive, so they may get more attention.
Some find the fact that you speak english appealing.
If you happen to be an american of a different race, of a minority race, so foreign looking well then foreigners everywhere get a little slack, so it’s the opposite.

Yeah and guys are guys, there are a lot of beautiful women in spain too. And they vary. It kind of depends where you are going, because in some places people are more reserved and what time you are going out at.
But keep safe yeah.

Q: I want to buy tickets for Britney Spears Circus tour in miami?
I know the concert is September 2nd in the AAA. And i’m an american express member, so i was hoping to score presales. But when i go on ticketmaster i dont see the miami show. Any ideas as to when i can buy the presales and where? or why the event isnt even on ticketmaster?

A: its on ticketmaster now:]

Q: With “impeachment off the table”, what other way could America express its anger at ex-President Bush?
Of course they booed him. He was the worst President in American history.

It’s a disgrace that he didn’t take a whistlestop farewell tour of every city in America, so everyone would have the opportunity to boo him in person.
bridgeba, maybe you forgot, but Bush was President when the WTC was attacked and he did nothing to stop it.

A: It is over. It is time to move on.

Q: Lady Gaga Tickets Help? Presale information please?
you know the presale for the uk leg of lady gaga’s monster ball tour, is the presale for american express card holders selling all tickets available
or are they just given a select amount
and then only will all tickets be sold on the general sale?
please help i’m getting very confused x

A: AMEX presales are usually only a very select few seats. More will be available during the general on sale.

Not sure if they will have UK presale codes, but i check this site for all my presale information.

Q: What is China doing that’s any different than what Tiger Woods is doing?
A powerful and dangerous force has been unleashed on the global economy. It’s a new source of skilled labor that has put American workers at a competitive disadvantage — and no one knows just how many jobs have already been lost because of it. The U.S. is running a huge trade deficit with this force; every year we’re spending millions more on what it produces than it spends on American goods and services. And to top it all off, this entity has built a massive currency reserve, investing large sums of it on U.S. government securities and thus enabling America’s fiscal profligacy.

Why, oh why, won’t the U.S. government do something to protect us from . . . Tiger Woods?

You thought I was talking about China, and I was. But I’m also talking about the modern-day golf legend. You see, China and Tiger Woods are a lot alike.

In seven out of the ten years since Woods burst onto the golf scene he’s been the top money-earner on the PGA Tour. He has forced his best competitors into second place while pushing countless players at the bottom of the heap out of the pro game entirely. He also has nudged athletes of all stripes from the lucrative endorsements market. He’s the best-paid corporate mascot ever, lending his name and likeness to General Motors, General Mills, American Express, Accenture, Nike, and more.

Such success both on an off the course has paid very well. Woods can’t possibly spend all the money he makes. (He took in $100 million from his Nike deal alone.) And what he doesn’t spend he either saves or invests, no doubt putting ample resources into U.S. government securities.

So what is Tiger Woods doing that’s any different than what China is doing?

Both are competing successfully. Both are earning more than they are spending. And both are saving and investing their wealth. If you think of Tiger Woods as his own country, he and China are just the same. Yet not a day goes by that we don’t read of some new political effort to throttle competition from China for the sake of the American worker and the American economy. Where are the initiatives aimed at protecting us from Tiger Woods? Think about that the next time a politician proposes protectionist legislation aimed at China.

Of course, pro golfers aren’t whining about being beaten by Woods. Rather, they know they must improve their games — or at the extreme, find new games to play. Competition is the lifeblood of sports, and the professionals accept this premise. At the same time, the consumers of sports — the rest of us who watch it on TV — insist on it: If there were no competition, sports wouldn’t be very interesting.

So why are American manufacturers whining about being beaten by China? And why do our politicians support these false notes?

Competition is the essence of business just as it’s the foundation of sports. That’s why we have antitrust laws; they’re an attempt to keep competition alive and well. And just as in sports, competition is good for consumers. It forces businesses to improve their products and keep prices low.

Yet there are people who understand all this in principle and still make an exception when it comes to competition from foreign nations. Why? There’s no fundamental difference between competing with someone across town or someone across the globe. Why the different set of rules for China and Tiger Woods, or for foreign and domestic competition?

One of the usual arguments against foreign competitors is that they are “unfair”; that they expect us to buy from them, but they won’t buy from us. China, it is said, is cheating us by building up an enormous “trade surplus,” which now totals over $1 trillion.

But Tiger Woods doesn’t buy as much from America as America buys from Tiger Woods. In fact, Woods is no different than anyone who has ever succeeded enough in life to accumulate savings. China does just that and it’s a problem. But it’s no problem when Woods does it, or for that matter when you and I do it. We often hear that the “trade deficit” with China means that America has gone into debt to buy Chinese goods. But that’s no more true than saying we’ve gone into debt in order to watch Tiger Woods play golf.

Some of the goods we import from China are paid for with exports. In fact, U.S. exports right now are running at record levels. For the rest of the goods we import from China, we pay money. But that’s money we have earned, fair and square. Just because China sold more to us than it bought from us doesn’t mean there’s any debt involved.

Say you bought a pair of Nike’s because you thought that ad with Tiger Woods in it was so cool. Did you pay for your sneakers with money, or did you export something to Nike? Last I checked this isn’t a barter economy, so you probably paid money. But that doesn’t mean you went into debt for those sneakers.

The China-bashers also say that China’s investments in U.S. government securities are “unsustainable,” and they worry about what will happen to U.S. interest rates if those investments are liquidated. Well, suppose China took that money and started buying U.S. goods with it, instead of saving it. That means U.S. producers would have a lot of very profitable work to do. And that money wouldn’t disappear. It would simply change hands, and its new holders would ultimately have to invest it.

Perhaps China worries so many, and Tiger Woods doesn’t, because he’s an American and China is, well, China. But try this thought experiment: If Woods weren’t an American, would you feel differently toward him? Would you want to slap a targeted tax or other penalty on him? Or would you restrict Americans from doing business with him? Your answer is likely “no” to each of these. You love watching him play golf. And even his competitors know that if he wins and they lose, that he has raised the level of the game and made it a better business for everyone involved.

So why do so many endorse protectionist laws against China? Don’t these very same people love buying cheap toasters at Wal-Mart — toasters made in China? And don’t the American firms which cannot compete with China understand that the ascent of this new economic force has lifted the entire global economy, ultimately making it a better game for everyone?

When you think it through there’s only one sensible approach to trade with China: Go get ’em, Tiger!

A: You really don’t know how to choose a good analogy.

Tiger Woods is a pro athlete who’s income is derived mainly from his endorsements from corporate sponsors. He is still taxed. He still obeys the laws. His currency is invested most likely, but invested in the general economy of which government securities are only one part.

Tiger Woods does not produce goods (other than entertainment). Tiger Woods is not in direct competiton with American manufacturers. Tiger Woods does not have his own currency, laws, or authoritarian government.

Also, Tiger Wood’s income is a fart in the wind compared to the economies of the US an China.

In other words, you’re comparing a golfing pro to a country. You might as well compare a baby to rock.

The reason why people are up in arms over China is that China isn’t playing fair.

Put simply, the global market works well IF the playing field is fairly level. This includes money markets (currencies) and trade regulations.

China keeps a death grip on it’s currency instead of floating it on the market. This keeps the currency at an artificial level, allowing for imbalanced trade in both goods and labor, not to mention lax labor laws.

If China isn’t going to play fair, then neither will the US.

To shoe-horn this into your analogy, Tiger Woods is cheating and the USPGA isn’t really stopping him from cheating. Do his competitors let him keep cheating, or take steps to stop him from cheating.

Nobody likes a cheater.

Q: Why has American society become so greedy?
Of course, capitalism implies that you have to want more to make anything more. But this is not an economic one as much as it is pop-cultural in some ways. Ever since the eighties it seems like people consume so much. Even in the 50s, a time a great economic security and wealth, people did not strive to literally take so much. My (living) grandparents take less and are more open minded than the teenagers, children, and adults in their thirties and forties I know. What has happened to us? We’ve forgotten how to love each other, in any sense of the word. I see that the children born in the nineties who are now becoming adults take and take relentlessly, particularly compared to our past. How can we get any further if we forget our roots, and how can we proceed to help the earth in any way if we continue to abuse more of it? And why have we become this way? Our politicians in the past 30 years have been good and bad, but they aren’t the main influence. What happened in the media, that caused this sudden shift, and why did it never go away? Musicians constantly speak of chasing wealth, and actors the same. Why can’t people be happy for who they really are and do what they do as a matter of expressing their emotions anymore? Obviously, it is human nature to want more than you have, and that is fine. But humans have always and will always be like that. This is out of control, excessive, and completely senseless. There is no reason to consume the amount that some people do or strive to. It gets to the point where they want so much they become worth nothing. And then they come out and have these huge nation wide apology tours and people actually feel sorry for them. I have noticed in my travels to other countries in Europe, Africa, and Asia that the people there are, of course, aspiring to things greater than them, but they still have the capacity to truly love each other, and they don’t take things so relentlessly. It is in my eyes, specifically America, and American media. I’m not so much asking people to be grateful for what they have, as I am for them to actually show love to someone that is not lust, and is not a tool for them to be more successful for themselves. The greed I see is greater than just wanting money, it is an emotional greed. Even the religious have left their virtues behind, in any faith to me, is what I see. I just wish people would love each other for being humans, and nothing more than that. Because, that is very possible, and it is accessible. It seems like not very many Americans do this at all any more, and less and less each generation. I don’t hate our country, I love our country. I just want people to also respect each other and it too, and not just so they can gain something for themselves. We are disgusting, and I feel ashamed. I just want to know why.

A: Your society is not very different from all others in the world. In fact if you come to India you’ll hardly find any non-greedy person including aged people. And the result is the whole nation is going down. People are so mean thay they won’t ask you for say even a glass of water if they think you are of no use to them while all our scriptures say offering someone water is one of the simplese but noblest acts toward not only your fellow humans but all creatures. There was a time in India when people would help each other w/o expecting anything in return. People would open pyaau (a kind of free drinking water place) for passers by and some would keep a vessel outside so that birds or wandering animals may drink some water from it in the scorching heat. But these days all these things are gone. The whole society has become so mean and selfish that you can’t even expect even a glass of water from someone.

Q: Chances at BU, GWU, American, Northeastern?
Academics:
-I am a high school junior at a tough college preparatory high school outside of New York City.

-I have an approximately 3.45 GPA

-SAT 2100

-I plan to do a year long independent study, at my school called a ‘Focus’ project, on an aspect of modern American politics I have yet to choose. This would involve field work and research in a field that I am especially passionate about.

EC’s
—-
-I am the Vice President of the Student Body at a school that takes its student government pretty seriously. I don’t know if it matters, but I won by a 75 percent margin in a three way race. I will be running for President this spring, and I hope to win, but with politics, who knows.

-I am the National/International Affairs editor for the school newspaper and have written extensively on American politics.

-I have played the guitar for the last 7 years. I am in the school guitar ensemble, Jazz-Rock band, and play in the pit orchestras for school musicals. I have also performed at gigs at local restaurants and cafes.

-My crowning musical achievement was setting up an afternoon group where students can play totally improvisational music in a pressure-less setting. We discuss techniques behind learning to play and improvise with a group.

-Last summer/fall, I worked at my real passion, politics. I compiled over 120 hours of volunteer work as a registered Intern for the Barack Obama campaign in New Jersey. Quesiton: I was told by the Democratic Party in Passaic County that they would write me a letter of recommendation if I so wished, signed by the Congressman. Would this be beneficial or seen as sort of shallow, as I never worked directly for the Congressman?

-I plan to write my essay on the experience of meeting so many thousands of interesting people and walking through so many ways of life, and explaining how this experience, walking through the northern part of the state for 5 1/2 months changed my life.

-Tour guide for my school, all 4 years.
-Varsity Cross Country, all 4 years. Won the coaches award, sophomore year.
-For the first time this year, I directed a one act play by Woody Allen for the student directed one acts.

I don’t know how to phrase it, but while I don’t have the top grades, or the best scores, I am considered to be mature and focused beyond my years by teachers, students and administrators. I have been pegged as the natural ‘leader’ of my school, and I don’t know how to express that without someone being a part of our community and meeting me. You guys probably get this a lot, though, that inability to put who you are on paper. Anyway…

What can I do to up my chances at these places?

Thank you!!

A: gwu is all about the cash…i bought my way in with an 800 sat score lol, if you can get in come here, its the shit

fuck american

Q: John McCain, history buff: will he advocate a return to American standards of decency in women’s apparel?
MERIDIAN, Miss., March 31 (Reuters) –

McCain’s appearance in Meridian began a trip down memory lane, opening a tour to places where he grew from rebellious youth to war hero and politician. He was a Navy flight instructor in Meridian and the McCain airfield is named for his grandfather.

The Arizona senator, 71, said Obama, a senator from Illinois, “hasn’t read or doesn’t understand the history of this country,” an experience-versus-youth theme likely to play out in the months leading to the November election if Obama defeats New York Sen. Hillary Clinton for the right to face McCain.

“In all due respect, he displays a fundamental misunderstanding of history, of how we maintain national security and what we need to do in the future to maintain our security. But I understand it because he has no experience or background in any of it,” McCain told reporters on his campaign flight back to Washington.

REGRETS

McCain said his own past helped him gain a better understanding of the present and future, and that this is why he had embarked on a tour of places like Meridian.

But he expressed some misgivings about his rebellious nature as a youth, saying young people should not do as he did, such as smoking and drinking to excess.

“Some of my behavior was very immature,” he said.

And, referring to his years spent in Vietnam,

“I regretted that the mini-skirt phase came and went while I was away.”

A: Are you sure you understand what he was saying?

“And, referring to his years spent in Vietnam,

“I regretted that the mini-skirt phase came and went while I was away.”"

He was on vacation in Vietnam while the mini-skirt phase came and went. He missed it. He regrets missing it. HE WANTED TO SEE WOMEN IN MINI SKIRTS!

The signed gutair, there is a website that you can order it. ONCE AGAIN, I AN NOT GOING TO GET ALL OF THESE THINGS, MY MOM TOLD ME TO WRITE DOWN 8-10 THINGS, AND SHE WILL GET 4-6 OF THEM!

A: That’s a VERY expensive wish list – I would say that most parents would consider getting half of those gifts…

Q: Video Game Dillemma that Needs Advice?
So, I have an American Express Gift Card. I want to get a new game. Problem is I am torn between 2: NHL 09 and Guitar Hero World Tour. I have a 360 by the way.

On one hand, I already have NHL 08 but the whole “Be a Pro” mode is really appealing to me. I have Madden 08 also, and I love the superstar mode in that. Is it worth it?

On the other hand, I have Guitar Hero 3 and Aerosmith already. Is THAT game worth it (World Tour)?

Give reasons upon your choice, thank you.

A: well i would go for GHWT cuz, you can always invite your friends and have a little party playing with the drums mic and guitar, unlike sports games, you can have tons of fun with friends and fam, also the guy who said once you played guitar hero you played all i think he lacks of music taste in a way, different songs and playmodes are available in all the guitars heroes, the game play is the same but the songs and difficulty changes so BURN!
