Q: Advice on Cruising & Excursions in Hawaii? Your experiences on Spirit of America cruise ship?
We are taking a Hawaiian cruise on the Spirit of America. Their prices for land excursions seem pretty high compared to what we’ve gotten on land on earlier trips. We’re considering scheduling our own excursions. I understand they will pick you up at the dock and return you to the ship.
Are you familiar with Hawaiian tourism, esp. cruising? If you are, what suggestions would you have? What’s the best way to save money on excursions or other things to do while in port? Is there perhaps an agency over there that can book adventures & excursions for us?
What excursions have you done and enjoyed the most? We’re a retired couple, so hiking the Na Pali coast is probably out, but we’re open to any suggestions.
Also, if you have sailed on the Spirit of America, we’d appreciate any advice about the ship, ports of call, or cruising in general. This is “free-style” cruising, and anything you could tell us about that would also be appreciated.
Thanks a lot for your help!
A: I believe that you are referring to Norwegian Cruise Line – Pride of America. Spirit of Hawaii is long gone along with the constitution – (not a political comment – actual name of the ship).
My former director had been on more than 100 cruises. She has been on all of NCL’s fleet. She is invited to the inaugral voyages of all of their ships. This was her favorite ship built in the last 10 years. She is hard to impress, so that said a lot to me. She found the Jewel and Pride of Hawaii that came after Pride of America disappointing. This is still her favorite in Hawaii.
Please visit their website at www.ncl.com for more information. You are able to preview and purchase shore excursions in advance of your cruise.
Keep in mind that the cruise line contracts with local vendors to offer the shore excursions. NCL guaranties the reliability and value of the vendor. There are other vendors that will offer the same shore excursions in the area…that can also be arranged independently in advance (reputable companies like Get to hawaii). This is an opportunity for less savory people to take advantage of vulnerable travelers (more common in caribbean/mexican markets) so buyer beware.
Free Style cruising means that there is no assigned dining room or dining time. You have a selection of 13 restaurants: Cadillac Diner, Jefferson’s Bistro, Lazy J Texas Steakhouse, East Meets West Sushi Bar, Teppanyaki, Little Italy, Aloha Cafe, Liberty Main Restaurant, Skyline Main Restaurant (9 without a cover charge). You choose when you want to eat and with whom you want to eat. If you want to dress up formally every night of the cruise you can…if you want to leave the suit at home you can. At the end of the cruise they don’t have assignments for disembarkation. You leave when you wish before 10am.
Lazy J’s has a cover charge ($20 per person) but is the best. Go there with your jeans and enjoy a great steak or 2 or 3. One covercharge.
Q: Adventure in Hawaii?
I’m looking for some crazy things to do in Hawaii at the end of the summer. If anyone has any good suggestions let me know. Also tell your experiences (likes dislikes, cool bars/clubs, hot spots, anything)
I appreciate it peeps! L8tr
A: How do you define crazy?
By many standards hiking up to the edge of a lava flow is pretty crazy. There are even those that don abestos type gear and play with the lava though that is discouraged. Hang Gliding over the lava flow would also be pretty crazy and I am certain that park rangers woul discourage it.
Ocean Sports are big in Hawai’i and aside from the usal surfing swimming etc there is Ocean kayaking which can be pretty intence and then there is Sail-Surfing which is exciting close to shore but if you truyly want to get crazy then Sail-Surf the Molokai Channel a distance iof around forty or fifty miles (too lazy to give exact distance but hey out in the open Ocean can be pretty crazy)..
There are also a lot of clubs catering to the military crowd so might suggest wrapping yourself in a white robe with a white turban and a long grayish black beard and enter uttering anti American slogans that ought to be good for an adventure!!
As for bars and clubs again what is your scene? There are lots of places in Waikiki that can get crazy depending on the night. Pearl Ultra Loungue caters to a high end crowd but the loudest buzz of late has been for Senor Frog.

Q: If you could go anywhere in the world where would you go? Would it be your dream vacation?
….Or a quick getaway from the kiddies? Would you like to go there for your Honeymoon? Or have you already been there & would like to go again?
If I could go anywhere…I’d want to go to Hawaii. That’s always been my dream vacation, my future honeymoon…& if I like it there…I might even condsider living in Hawaii. I hear it’s a beautiful state/island. I’d LOVE to take my WILD adventures to Hawaii.
A: I would def go to hawaii. I just can’t get enough of that place! I have been 6 times and I have found enough on Oahu to do that i haven’t even ventured out to the other islands yet! Here are some things in Waikiki and around the island to do;Dukes is def cool and right on the beach, and if you want to dance with the youngsters you can head over to scruples. There are a ton of eating places down on the strip but the real hawaii is out of town. Take the bus or drive up to manoa and experience the rainforest and a natural waterfall! Take a trip to the north shore and go to waimaia valley and see some of the most spectacular fauna anywhere! If you adventurous hike along the ridges and see paradise from 4000 feet! I did that and loved every second of it..ok well it was more like 8 hours of it but anyway..lol. Diving and snorkeling are pretty awesome too! Hanuama bay is touristy and with good reason. You are guaranteed to see tons of fish and have a nice afternoon at a beautiful beach! Diving can be done just off shore and runs around 100 bucks for 2 tanks and you don’t need to be experienced. Not far out of town you can jetski or parasail. Wouldn’t really bother with the jetskiing cause they have too many rules in hawaii but the parasailing is something you should atleast try once. After that it gets kind of boring. In town the international market place is def cool and worth strolling through…a tip..go to all the kiosks and then go back and don’t be affraid to barter..that’s how it works there! On the weekend a really cool thing to do it go to aloha stadium for a huge flea market!!! I mean huge the tents go all around the stadium and everything you find for suviners in waikiki you will find there for way i mean way cheaper!! Oh one last thing, you have to go to a luau and the paradise cove luau is the best. oh crap…just thought of something else that will help you out. Go to Entertaiment.com and buy the book for hawaii and it will give you so many discount coupons it will pay for it self right away. I did and it worked great. Don’t forget that part..really do it you won’t be sorry. Many 2-1 coupons on dinners in waikiki which is really expensive.I have been to hawaii 6 times now and would love to live there. I hope you make it cause you won’t forget it! Aloha!
Q: Hawaii BIG Island….tell me your experiences !?
Anyone who has been there, please share all the best things you did/ activities and adventures you went on. Also, the house we are staying at is on Lako Drive…….anyone familiar with that area?
A: I went to college there and lived for a year. I recently went back for my honeymoon.
My biggest suggestion is to rent a car. Regardless of where you are, drive to the other side of the island.
Hilo: Farmer’s Market, Waterfront Area, Rainbow Falls, Akaka Falls
Closer to Kona: Flumin the Ditch
Volcano National Park – Observatory (make reservations), Hiking
Kona area: Snorkeling!!! , Heiau
Waikoloa Shopping
I love the big island – much mellower than Oahu
Q: Has anyone been on Captain Bob’s Adventure Cruises (snorkeling) – Oahu, HI?
I heard theft is really high in Hawaii. Do you know if they offer lockers to store your personal belongings?
A: I don’t know about Captain Bob’s. There is Snorkel Bob’s on 3 islands. ~ snorkelbob.com ~ call them, they are a good business with good equipment rental prices & they will tell you where to go on your own or take you on a tour. ~ http://snorkelbob.com/cgi-local/SoftCart.exe/?E+scstore
Q: Do you have advice on Cruising Excursions in Hawaii or the Spirit of America cruise ship?
We’ve scheduled a Hawaiian cruise on the Spirit of America, and may want to schedule our own land excursions. I am told they will pick you up at the dock and return you to the ship.
Are you familiar with Hawaiian tourism, esp. cruising? If you are, what suggestions would you have? What’s the best way to save money on excursions or other things to do while in port? Is there perhaps an agency over there that can book adventures & excursions for us?

A: There is a lady in Sarasota, Florida that is exceptionally knowledgeable on the subject of Hawaiian Cruises who can answer almost any question for you about the Spirit of America and scheduling your own land excursions. Her name is “Candy” her Toll Free number to call is: 866-807-7386 M-F 9-6 EST on Ext.# 2037. She has full access to the Gulliver’s World Travel Data Bank Service. She can be very helpful to You!
Q: How nice is the state Hawaii?
I’m 22 and REALLY need a change in life. I’m the exploring/adventure kind of guy. I love learning about rainforests, deserts, myths, and anything from other countries. I currently live in PA. Life is so dull, I really want a change. My friend went to Hawaii awhile back and loved it. She wanted to move there. I see alot about Hawaii and it looks like my type of place. I just want to be able to have an energetic atmosphere, and something to do, no matter how small it is, just something. Can someone who’s been there, or lives there give me some insight on Hawaii, and living costs, compared to PA. if you have an idea what the living costs are like in the upper states. Thanks so much for all your help!
A: “We’ve been coming here for more than thirty years, and we never knew how hard it was to live here until we moved.” That’s what a nurse said who was selling me some furniture before moving back to California. There are a lot of these great deals on furniture right now. I just wish I had more money and room.
In her particular case, she had been a school nurse in California, but Hawaii doesn’t have school nurses. They have school health aides. She tried to get a job at the local hospital, but she couldn’t get anything but night shift. Her years of experience in California didn’t count for much on that front. Only about nine or ten years in the local nurse’s union would get her day shift. She ended up taking a job she loved for about 1/3 what she was making in California, but eventually gave up.
She loved it here, but couldn’t make it. About half the people who move here seem to hate it, and they move back.
But just about everything else you buy will be more expensive, because it costs more to ship it here, and it costs more to rent the store you buy it in.
Rents will probably be comparable to places near NYC or DC, but houses will be smaller, and light switches and power outlets will stick out of the walls (single-wall construction). The real humbug is that you probably won’t make as much working in Hawaii–assuming you can find a job in these tough economic times–as you would back in PA.
You should also know that a northeastern accent and vibe really tends to rub locals the wrong way. A couple of years ago, we were in Philadelphia touring Independence Hall, and the tour guide was from New York. She was just giving her regular spiel, but the folks who grew up on Oahu all felt like they’d been scolded by a really stern teacher. I had to explain, “She’s not mad at you. She’s just from New York.” Still, it was hard for them to get over that feeling.
If you can handle it, try reading the article I’ve linked below, and the 40 or so pages of comments to get an idea what life in Hawaii is really like.

Q: is it ok to ask your girlfriend whether or not she hooked up with some1 else during our “Break?”?
ok, so my girlfriend and i needed space from each other. we broke up for a month to give each other space, during the month we broke up, she went to hawaii on vacation with herself with a large group of strangers for this adventure camp, meaning people share tents and etc. we are now back together, but my whole thing is… i want to know whether or not she’d hook up with any1 over there while we were broken up cuz alot can happen in a month especially when you are on vacation. my main thing is how do i ask her?
i want to know because, if i find out that she hooked up with some1 while we were broken up. it’s a danger sign and i should just leave her.
A: she did im sorry man i shouldnt have but she was all over me and you know one thing led to another………………..
Q: what do you do when your friends are out of control?
Before a trip to Hawaii, my 3 friends were against alcohol, smoking of any type, never had their 1st kiss, were reliable to their friends & parents, & wanted to wait till marriage or at least someone they loved. But since the trip, they lie to their friends and parents in order to travel out of state to meet guys they’ve know for only 4 days, or just to get drunk/wasted (1 is on meds). They’re advancing too fast sexually with guys they don’t know well, they act too cool to hang with their other friends & they’re starting to smoke weed.I haven’t talked to them since the trip 3-4 months ago because they’ve been treating me poorly but their recent adventure has upset my other close friend to tears. They’re out of control & hurting everyone w/ the choices they make. Is there a way to make them change, anything i can do to help or is letting them make their own mistake (which is harsh) the only option? they’re starting college soon and i feel they’ll learn too late w/ the latter option.
A: well first of all you are a very good friend well you could tell them that one day they could end up in the hospital or even worse dead that they are just ruining there own life’s cause the people they love are all worried about them they have to think about how there future is going to be and how they are going to end up good luck and please take care
Q: me and my friend – a bottle of mustard?
our adventures took us to hawaii. i saw this hot chick in maui and i didnt know how to approach her. just then i remembered my friend the bottle of mustard. i went up to her and said hey do you like mustard on your tropical meat. i then proceeded to squirt mustard all over my balls
the end
A: Then, you slept alone that night, didn’t you? Silly man.
Q: help edit my sponsorship letter ! i need major help.?

Dear,
How are you guys ? I am writing to you to tell you about the great opportunity I have. I have recently been nominated be the Hawaii ambassadors of music to be a part of the 2010 European concerts tour to share the culture and represent our state. It is a great opportunity to grow musically by playing in a made up of the nominated students from all of the islands, and also be taught by some of the best musicians Europe has to offer.
We are going to be going to seven different countries which include England, France, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, Germany and Liechtenstein. It will be very exciting to perform for large crowds of people in each country. We will also have the great opportunity to have to tours of world famous landmarks like the Eiffel Tower, the Tower of London ,Cannels of Venice and much more. It is truly a great honor to be a part of this concert tour.
I need to raise $5,000 in order to go on this trip. I am currently doing lots of fundraisers including Garage Sales, Bake sales and babysitting. If you have any other fundraiser ideas I appreciate your input. I am really determined to do on this once in a life time experience. To be able to participate in this amazing adventure I need your support. If you could donate to my dream I would greatly appreciate it. Every donation helps!

A: Greetings! I hope you are well and that you are as happy as I am. I have had the most wonderful thing happen! I received a nomination to represent Hawaii as a music ambassador and share our culture as a part of the 2010 European Concerts Tour. This is a great honor. I will grow musically, playing with a group of students chosen from all of the Hawaiian Islands. In Europe we will receive instruction from some of the best musicians Europe has to offer!

I am requesting your support so I may participate in this amazing adventure. It’s difficult to ask for money and I understand that with the present economy being what it is that it may be difficult to donate. Any help you can offer making my dream come true will never be forgotten. I love you and wish you well. Thank you for your support.
Love,
Tiffany,
I spent over an hour on this. This is my donation to you.
I hope you reach your goal.
If it is difficult for family and friends to donate maybe they could sponsor a garage sale for you. Also could you cut a CD of your music and sell give on e to each person who donates as a thank you or even sell it at your garage sale? Also you might want to request people donate items to the sale. One more thing Go to local merchants and ask them to donate. Take the nomination letter so you look legit.
Ali
PS you might want to give me your email address in case I come up with more ideas.
Q: can you give me you opinon on my sponsorship letter edit revise add comments?

Q: how can i go sailing inexpensively?
I am a carpenter and would like to trade for a sailboat at least a 30 ‘ iam a handy man of all kinds .finding it hard to save enough towards my goal of owning or atleast sailing on my own . would consider a partner.I love adventure ,I am a christian ,I ride horses and Harleys , am single willing to relocate , ,,the islands , Hawaii ,Riviera … come on some tips please make an ol mans dream come true. not really old Healthy’ except for this brain tumor I would even consider a fixer upper and be your humble servant for a year . did i mention i do windows ….and sheetrock , roofs …
A: I think it would help if you first learn about sailing. Once you have even a small amount of experience, there are many people looking for crew. I have a 40′ sailboat and I am always looking “good” crew. Someone who knows just a little about sailing but is willing to work and learn. There are “singles” sailing organizations in most popular sailing areas and this is a good place to meet people looking for crew. Particularly with your skills, you should be able to find people to sail with very easily.
To learn the basics take either a couple Power Squadron courses or the Coast Guard Auxiliary offers classes too. Both are very inexpensive and quite good.
Another way to learn to sail is to go down to the local Marinas and talk to boat owners. Make up a “resume” with contact info, a list of your skills and be straight forward about what you want. “Will work for sailing”. A few references would be bad either.
As I said, most boat owners are always looking for crew who are willing to help and work. There are LOTS of people who want to go for a ride. They don’t get asked back. The ones who help (includes cleaning, sanding, polishing, cooking, etc) always get asked back. Over and over.
Good luck.
