Q: Can an airline employee’s standby ticket get upgraded to first class? Is it free? If not how much more $?
I know people who work for airline carriers and their dependents fly standby for free. Standby is coach seating of course. I want to know if an employee has the option to upgrade to first class, and if so how much? I heard that they get discounts for hotels, rental cars, cruises, and other things associated with travel. I’m considering getting a part time job at the airport to take advantage of the travel benefits.
A: Each airline is different. The poster before me isn’t completely correct. Pilots don’t always come ahead of everyone. Most airlines rank employees based on hire date, and job duties. The CEO will come before managers and supervisors who will come before regular agents. Most airlines I’ve worked for had flight attendants, pilots, and agents all ranked the same.
Anyways, some airlines give free travel to employees some charge a small fee. Some upgrade for free, some charge another fee, sometimes it depends on the first class cabin. One airline I worked for had first class for domestic, and a nicer first class for international flights, so basic first class was the same price as coach, while the international first class was a little bit more.
Sometimes you also have to dress nicer than you would in coach.
And yeah a lot of airlines get discounts on all of those things you mentioned. Some airlines have better deals than ever. I think working part time would be great if you can find something. Check out which airlines fly to your nearest airport, and then go to their website and see who’s hiring. Most aren’t, but a handful are, always worth a shot.
Q: What are the benefits of using a travel agent? Is it cost effective? Can they help me with details?
I am planning a trip to Jamaica & was considering using a travel agent. I have heard both that they are free because they get throw backs form the places they promote, and that they are not free and you have to pay booking fees. I was surfing expedia.com & priceline.com, but fear that I am not going to get what I am looking for if I buy a vacation package online. Can a travel agent help me secure vacation details & extras, particular suites, & first class tickets?
A: I have travel both using travel agencies and booking online, and I guess none of them is better than the other, it all depends on your expectations, for example travel agencies have special offers to certain places, that will be cost effective and some of them are pretty cool, but you need to fly with certain airline, made the reservation with certain hotel etc, and if you want to have something different, then it begins to be expensive, for example they offer you a fave trip to cancun, but if you want to travel to panama city instead, staying in the same resort chain, the same amount of days, etc, it is far more expensive.
Now booking online offers you the possibility to select the hotel, the airline etc, etc, and you can save some money, but you need to book with a lil bit of anticipation time, and although you can book online a lot of services, you can have made a more detailed trip with the help of a good travel agent, as you wish with particular suites & first class tickets, of course it will cost a lil bit more, but you can see it as an investment, because you can travel with the security that you have a well planed trip.
Q: What grade of service is expected in domestic air travel?
I often see posts complaining about airline travel. Since deregulation in the industry and fierce competition to move people at bargain basement prices; the airlines have worked hard to survive. To do this they downsized, merged, added seats, cut extra services, and employees have also taken cuts in pay and benefits. A first class fare in most instances still get the royal treatment; but cabin class is most likely flying cheaper than bus or train fare. Given this, the flight attendants whom are really there for the safety of the passengers spend a great deal of time seeing to your comfort, waiting on passengers wanting cocktails and watching the kids for Mom and Dad who are so tired from getting everyone to the airport on time have decided to take a two hour nap. The flight crews are professional and do their best to get you to your destination speedily and comfortably all for $99 each way from NY to Disney World. So 1 to 5 stars what do you expect and what is 5 star service these day’s?
A: AMR gives about a C- performance in coach, and I’d give Jet Blue a B+ for coach.
Cactus gets an F as does USAIR
Only stellar A+ service I’ve ever had was on a private charter where you can still slap a flight attendants ass and still have a job the next day.

A: I don’t care anything about eating or drinking on short flights.
What I care about is a seat to sit in that’s large enough for comfortable sitting, reclines slightly for additional comfort and enough leg room to relax my legs for the entire flight time. Sitting cramped straight up, with knees up to my chin & a seat that’s too small for my buns is ridiculous. And I’m a small size female not even overweight.
That just doesn’t happen much any more on any airline.
Q: Is it justifiable to raise the so-called “salary” of M.P.’s of Indian Parliament by more than fourfold?
As it is, politics in India has become the most lucrative career with the prospect of becoming millionaires overnight, especially for criminal-minded persons, since it does not require any academic or professional qualification, nor is there any need to go through any tough selection procedure to secure a job. Consequently, increasing number of youth, especially from rural areas and drop-outs, are getting attracted to politics which will result in birth of more regional parties, further division of States, more demands for autonomy and secession in days to come.
Now this recent ambitious demand of the MP’s to increase their honorarium (why call it salary?) to fivefold (Rs.80,000/-) of the existing Rs. 16,000/- and their unbecoming and ugly behavior in the House has come as a big shock to the entire nation. Do these guys (except the decent few) even deserve at all to enter the Temple of Indian Democracy? These guys compare themselves with their counterparts in the USA where per capita income is $ 33,070.30, 75 times more than India’s $ . 441.56. The other day these guys humiliated the PM for his so-called indifference to the plight of the common man. Are they now showing their “deep concern” for the common man by demanding high honorarium for themselves? Why do they forget these huge “perks” enjoyed by them:-
Constituency Allowance: Rs 2,40,000 per annum (For staying at home?)
Daily Allowance (To attend Parliament in session): Rs 1,000 (Are they elected for staying at home?)
Gadgets: Laptop
Benefits: House, Air travel (Business Class), Train travel (First Class A/C), Telephones (All free calls), Free Medical facilities, Free Petrol for Cars at Delhi and in Constituency, Interest free loans for cars
Fund at disposal (Constitution Development): Rs 2,00,00,000 per annum (How is it really utilized?!!!)
The willingness of the Central Cabinet to enhance their honorarium by threefold in one stroke and then to fourfold in the next stroke proves that all of them there are worried about their own chairs and comforts and not about the country.
Is there no way to stop exploitation of the poor general masses for empire-building by the politicians?
PS: Kindly read against “Fund at disposal ” (Constituency Development) in stead of Constitution…
Something more to think about: a) Will this hike not distract youth from pursuing senior level education and generate more aspirants to join politics?
b) What is the guarantee that larger number of corrupt & criminal minded persons who are more resourceful and always at advantage will not dominate the political scene, depriving the honest and competent lot from benefit?
c) Will this not lead to emergence of more number of regional political parties and demand for further division of States to satisfy the aspirations of new leaders?
A: I think recession is going on so these poor politician want to hike their salaries dandha acha nahi chal raha hai. nobody is doing good work they are not fit to sit in parliment
Q: military and college education. how many people joined for the benefits but couldnt take classes????
Like a lot of people who join the military…I joined for the education, benefits, travel, get away from home for a while, and to serve my country. 4.5 years later I am out of the military and only one college class under my belt…and I was told that I had to take a class then which was my first summer away from home (besides basic and tech school)…after that summer I was ready to take a couple of classes but everytime that I tried “I was the only experience in the office” or there were inspections, exercises, deployments, or rotations coming up that we had to get ready for…
I guess what I’m trying to ask is how many other folks got “screwed” like me…at least I do have my MGIB…
THANKS!!
I know the AF is not the same as the other branches…but at one time I was a 2 striper with running the office…had to deal with the wing commander to bail butter bars out of trouble a couple times a week…and generally got to work at 6 am and didn’t leave till about 12 hours later…just to get the job done…
A: I joined the Navy right out of high school as a nuclear machinist mate and by the time that I had time to take a class underway we were in a overhaul. I joined not to attend college while in but to get away from my parents and serve our country. I did sign up for the GI Bill but thanks to that ***hole of a President in the 90’s I got screwed with how much help it was (he basically froze the amount that the GI Bill paid out versus the actual cost of education). Some of the people that I worked with got picked up to attend college to become an officer and others had time to take computer based classes while underway. I was still qualifying during our last run so I had no time.
Q: Things we learnt in 2007 ……….?
“Responsible parenting” – To leave one’s children unattended in an unlocked room in a foreign country while having drinks with ones friend.
“Back Garden” – An area no less than 50 yards. Usually with a large pool and many foreigners who you have never met before wandering around in it.
“The faceless man with 1970’s clothing ….” – A known paedophile who will snatch children at the earliest opportunity.
“Fringe Benefits” – Although you may suffer a loss, you will also be rewarded with private jet trips to see the Pope and first class travel to the United States. You will even be allowed to moan when the size of your plane does not meet your expectations.
“The Hill in Praia Du Luz” – It can be conquered in less than 19 minutes by a female (source K. McCann).
A: Oh no, we’re not back on this again … are we..??!
Q: Are all my Liberal and Conservative friends having a Happy Holidays?
I know RNC Chairman Michael Steele is!
“Is RNC Chairman Michael Steele putting personal profit ahead of his party? Republicans who have previously held his post are speaking out against Steele’s continued side career as a for-pay speaker, earning between $8,000 and $20,000 (plus first-class travel and lodging) for appearances. Steele already earns $223,500 per year for his elected post, and Frank J. Fahrenkopf—RNC chairman under President Reagan—protests, “The job of a national chairman is to give speeches. That’s what the national party pays him for.” Jim Nicholson, who held the post from 1997-2000, said the job “demands so much of your time that you can work 24/7 and not get everything done, so taking time out to speak for the benefit of one’s own bank account is not appropriate.” Steele’s office deflected the criticism, saying that Steele is following appropriate rules and “has been giving inspirational speeches based on his personal story long before he was elected RNC chairman.”

A: Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night…
Q: Travel perks by government employees.?
This question is geared to those people who have to pay out of pocket (if they can) for their vacations. Government employees are allowed to keep their frequent flyer miles, rental car and hotel points, then use them for personal travel such as honeymoons and trips to the Caribbean with their families or sweeties. A government employee will tell you they deserve it because of the hardship of travel. These people are told before they take the job that they face frequent travel. They don’t have to take the job. If these “points” were given back to the government (taxpayer money) to create new tickets instead, it would save several billion dollars a year. How do you feel about paying for thousands of government employees and their families elaborate vacations (often first class)? Don’t you think that the government should demand the traveller return their points to the government/taxpayer fund to create new tickets with them for government travel instead of allowing the employee to use your tax dollars to vacation? Trouble is, the ones that can do anything about it (lawmakers), enjoy this benefit, so why would they vote something out that is so beneficial to them.
A: The federal government used to keep all the frequent flier miles and points.
If you’ve ever tried to use frequent flier miles or points, you know the problem is all the restrictions. Very tough to get a flight, gotta book it way in advance, can’t change it once you do, can’t travel in peak periods, etc.
Business travel just doesn’t work like that, government or otherwise.
The government had all these miles/points, but couldn’t ever use them. You then have to create an infrastructure to try to use and manage them, which is costly and of dubious value anyway. They finally gave up and just said “keep ‘em, it’s not costing us anything extra anyway”.
In the grand scope of gov’t spending, I think they got this one right.
Q: Did Nancy Palosi check Priceline before she went to Italy?
Here we go again. I’m not going to bash her or insult her which is my usual modus operandi. This time I’m giving her the total benefit of the doubt. I presume you have been watching CNN who is commenting on her trip to Italy and the cost to taxpayers. Let’s get beyond that for a moment. The point is that she and her cohorts took a private jet which, according to CNN, costs $10,000 an hour to operate. They also said that the total trip costs $200,000.00 but they can’t confirm that yet.
So I went to Priceline and checked four(4) round trip tickets from KSFO to Rome, Italy. I also gave her the benefit of first class arrangement over business class. So, sombody please help me out. Here’s what I got in what should be a comfortable scenario for her:
http://www.priceline.com/travel/airlines/lang/en-us/fare_results_departure.asp?session_key=5C0011AC5D0011AC20090220060013470e30366584&plf=pcln&path=cfe
Is that price include the total for four tickets like I asked? If you look to the right, it sure seems to. Both American and United Airlines seem to pretty much have the same offer. Even if you did multiply that by four, it’s still well, well over $100,000.00 of savings over what she pulled off. Ok, wait a minute. I’ll do the math and say around $51 or 2K and throw in the hotel for 4 grand? The total would have to be less than $60,000; please. You can go to any travel agency and do better than what she just did.
A: Are you kidding? Nancy fly coach? Fat chance that will ever happen. Not when you’re paying for it!

A: I keep telling you people that she has illusions of grandeur.
The woman has cracked her head.
She thinks that she is the straw President of America.
I’ve been watching her since she became Speaker!
She said that she was going after Bush, then did a 360 plus and
said “I have my agenda to attend to”!
Like sticking one of her grandchildren mug into a camera, at every opportunity. (I know a lot of politicians have done this) but the times she’s done this it is weird!
She is now building her own base. Obama’s people are
watching her closely! She’s off the hook.
Q: Unemployment, enforced retraining and raising school leaving age.?
Does anyone see the connection. The government cannot produce enough new jobs. But if unemployment goes up it will be yet another nail in Labours coffin.
Solution, force people to stay at school ’till 18 even if they have no desire or aptitude for further learning.
And force re-training on out of work adults.
And what benefit will the country gain from trying to give street sweepers, traffic wardens, night watchmen, car park attendants etc A levels or equivallents – NONE. We will still need these people so they will still have those jobs but they will have lost 2 years pay in unnecessary further education and mostly have failed all the A levels or vocational equivallents anyway.
Who will benefit? Maybe the government ministers will get to keep their jobs, Jags, five course banquets at which they can discuss 3rd world starvation and poverty and they will keep their first class world travel and excellent salaries.
Much of what you say is true Vonnie but only for some people. There are people who prefer jobs with no pressure and there are people who cannot or don’t want to learn but still want to work. Why try to knock square pegs into round holes. Let them do what they want, leave school early and do a job they don’t need to learn and for those who want a skilled job provide the opportunity to learn but don’t force it on people who don’t want it and will never use it.
A: The Government need to start offering funded retraining options to people who want them.
My partner’s story is this: he started a mechanics apprenticeship after school and served just over 18 months of it. He was then thrown out of the house by his awful mother so that she could move her boyfriend in (worst mother in the world IMHO) and with nowhere to live and no money to pay rent, had to move 250 miles away to Wales to live with a friend and her family. So he had to leave his apprenticeship. He just didn’t know what else to do – he was a scared 18 year old with no money and nowhere to live.
He never got back into mechanics training. He started applying for apprenticeship places once he got down to Wales and he tried and tried but wasn’t successful – there was too much competition down here and the employers wanted 17 year olds not nearly-19 year olds who’d already done half their training elsewhere. He ended up working in MaccyD’s!!! Then pulling pints in a pub (where we met).
He’s now 25 and ekes out a living on two minimum wage jobs to support me and our baby son until I go back to work. He works as a driver for hire firm by day and delivers pizzas at night!! He’d love to retrain, either to be a mechanic or a driving instructor or an HGV driver, get a proper skill/career and a decent wage. And guess whats funding is available?
£0.0000
Other than “Career Development Loans” which are credit checked (he has a bad credit history because his mother made him take out a £4,000 loan and buy her a car on his apprenticeship wage, needless to say he coudn’t keep up the repayments) and “Train now Pay Later” packages which are also credit checked.
So he’s stuck in a dead end job with no chance of getting out of it unless we win the lottery to pay for his £2,000 training fees.
The Government bleats and whines about “skills gaps” and the need to fill them but what does it do about it? Oh yes of course, it imports ready-trained workers from Poland who will do the job for £5.50 an hour. Because thats a lot cheaper than training up local lads and paying them a fair wage isn’t it?
This Government is an absolute *crock*.
Q: National Insurance Stamps, Benefits and Retraining Laws for Self Employed?
In the Building Industry nearly everyone has to work through an agency because there aren’t very many jobs on PAYE. My husband is a Carpenter and in the credit crunch there is no work, he has paid his Class 2 (weekly stamp) and class 4 (annual stamp – worked out on how much you earn) so you can end up paying as much as anyone else in regular employment. However, once there is no work you are first out of a job and never entitled to any benefits unlike those employed through an employer, the best you get is your weekly stamp paid (£2.40). I suggested to my husband that he spent his unemployment time learning a new trade but he’s been told by the job centre he is not entitled to go on any courses because he is not on benefits of any kind. In addition he travels up to 100 miles round trip to go to interviews for non-existent jobs and no travel expenses are available. Because I work full time we cannot get anything no matter what wage I earn, but I still have to support all these fruitless journeys to jobs where they are hoping to get contracts within the next few months if things take off. One might think why bother going into the job centre every other week just to get a £2.40 stamp paid, well there is a very good reason, if he doesn’t do it, he drops off the government unemployed figures, anyone think all this is deliberate to stop people from being classified unemployed? Equally, does anyone have any genuine ideas on a way ahead? We cant afford to pay for him to go to college.
A: Yes, very unfortunate being in the building industry as it’s usually the first hit during a recession.
My only suggestion, and I’m sure you’ve already thought of this, print some flyers for handyman jobs locally or advertise in the local paper if you can afford this. There are always people who need small jobs done and if he’s prepared to do this and he’s good at what he does and is reliable and honest, this could build into a small business over time. The benefits are cash jobs, self employment, a good income and flexibility.
I wish you much luck. Been there done that and it’s not fun.
Q: Silver House Hotel Job?
I got an email offer from Silver House Hotel London offering me £5000 per month as sales coordinator. Salary will be £500 per month, weekly allowances of 1,300Gbp Usd per week, free meal until your employment contract is over, covered by risk and life Insurance.
They offered me a first class flight ticket for your travelling to UK, Transport Allowance: 950 Gbp per week, they will be paying a shift allowance of 675 Gbp per shift .
Other employment benefits include;
. Fully furnished accommodation (Family/Single housing)
. Medical, Dental and Optical care
. Official vehicle/Status cars
. Upfront salary advance payments
. Relocation expenses
. Life/health insurance policy implementation, Medical, Dental and Optical care
. You will be giving a free accomodation in our Hotel.
. Your Work Permit, Flight Ticket and Uk Entry Visa will be taking care of by our Hotel.
It’s just too good to be true.
Can you help me?
A: Screams of a scam. They will ask you to send your personal details so they can apply for a visa for you (and if you send then there is a massive risk of Identity fraud), then secondly they will ask you for money for some reason e.g. costs for the work permit etc and if you send it then you can kiss it goodbye.
The “wonderful” job opportunity is a typical scam and even Western Union (which is the likely method they will ask you to send the money by) warns about it on their own site http://www.westernunion.com/WUCOMWEB/staticMid.do?method=load&pagename=fraudScams
The other obvious factor is that unemployment is at it’s highest level for many years in the UK and people would kill for this kind of job. A non-EEA national would never be granted a work permit by the UK border agency for a job which could be filled by anyone from the EEA labour market. There are strict conditions for issuing work permits based on very high skills/experience http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/workingintheuk/
So then looking at the specific details of this scam
- salary -> £5000 x 12 = £60,000 per year. You have to be kidding me lol. That is the same salary as a lawyer or a politician in the UK. there is NO way that a sales cordinator of a hotel would command that level of salary.
- Plus weekly allowances in $’s – why if it’s a UK position would they pay anything in $’s?
- First class flight?
Then the “Silver House Hotel” – well there is no Silver House Hotel in London for a start. Every company has to register with Companies House in the UK and there is no Silver House Hotel in London http://wck2.companieshouse.gov.uk/48a1362f4d59dfabd1a799a175549963/companysearch
Then googling there is confirmation of this being a scam, but suspiciously the page has disappeared. Scammers are very careful to try to get pages deleted to avoid being shown up, but it did show me that the Email address they use is a gmail one. This again is a typical scammer trait. Ask yourself why would a reputable company that can afford to pay a sales co-ordinator the salary of a politican, not be able to afford a domain name and would use gmail!
So it IS too good to be true and avoid like the plague!
Q: What is life like as a Geologist? Loads of questions!!?
If you are a geologist I want to hear how your life is like. I don’t care how long, the more detailed the better. I have no knowledge in the field, never met a geologist nothing outside of nat geo and discovery channel. My OVERALL goal is to be a Planetary Geologist (study other planets) as my career.
——————-
I was first inspired to be a Planetary Geologist after watching a show on Discovery called “95 Worlds and Counting”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7mes8Rl0igY
And also thanks to the recent mind blowing photos of NASA’s HiRise
http://hirise.lpl.arizona.edu/nea.php
So I want to do the equivalent of what the HiRise team must be doing. I was told to get a BS in geology. What should I know about geology? From taking my first class to what I can do with it?
With the talk being about Global Warming can I assume there are jobs out there, or is it like astronauts where there are more geologist than jobs available? Who is better to work with NOAA, NASA, USGS or others?
Questions I have:
(1) I read as a geologist your initiation is basically spending 5 years on a oil rig or (fishing) boat? How true is that? Will I have to do that?
(2) How hard is it to be a scientist working in Antarctica? ..like is their a waiting list or something? I want to work there and experience conditions there as it is close to conditions on “other worlds.”
(3) I live in Virginia, should I transfer to a college in the west to do this? Do you think there are decent schools here or will I have more benefits if I move to the west, for example to Arizona.
(4) To be a planetary geologist are the other fields important? Like meteorology and oceanography? Are they defined as “Climatology” and would these be at all relevant?
(5) Do you travel while in school for Geology? Like field trips of sorts? Do you visit volcanoes and experience hurricanes? Do you go to other countries? Are there colleges known for this?
(6) How math heavy is geology? Does it require really complexed math?
(7) Is the workload of a geologist really heavy? Is it a stressful job, I know you have to travel a lot sometimes.
(8) In the next 5 years where do you see this field?
and finally, Astronomers have space.com, universetoday.com, dailygalaxy.com are there similar sites for geology? Who should I know about in geology, who are the neil degrasse tysons and carl sagons of geology?
A: (1) I started out my geological career by spending 6 1/2 years working on oil rigs (mainly off-shore but also at some on-shore sites). After initially finding the work very interesting, it became very boring & monotonous; I was pleased when my employer made me redundant due to a fall-off in the number of their contracts. There are many graduates that start out their careers doing many other aspects of geology.
(2) Here in the United Kingdom, there are occasional opportunities to work there with the British Antarctic Survey. As for people from other countries, I don’t know but I believe there are opportunities.
(3) If you want to work as a geologist, you need to think about WHY an employer would employ you. In most jobs (except for work in Government Surveys), an employer is wanting to ‘do’ something that has the potential of making them money & they use geologists to reach that goal. This may be gold exploration (in the hope of finding a gold mine), oil exploration (in the hope of finding an oil field) or soil / rock mechanics surveys (in preparation for the building of roads, dams, large buildings). By all means study planetary geology but you also need to consider its relevance to the jobs market. My suggestion is to enrol in a school that has a strong mining or petroleum emphasis.
(4) I don’t know the exact answer to that question. You would need to talk to people from the USGS who happen to be involved in planetry geology. As a guess, I’d say that it would involve some climatology & meteorology.
(5) Yes, there are a lot of field trips; I travelled to both Spain & Zimbabwe when I was a student but my main travelling has been SINCE I graduated. I’ve spent 8 years working in Africa, 3 1/2 years working in Central Asia, 2 years in southern Europe and 1 year working in South America (as well as brief tours in Canada, Mexico & the Far East). I have never visited a volcano (though that MIGHT be part of your future course) but I have experienced earthquakes in various parts of world during my work there.
(6) Maths does feature in any Geology course but there is not such a heavy emphasis as in Chemistry or Biology. The mathematics is generally not very complex.
(7) Work CAN be stressful & heavy; it depends on the particular contract. It depends on the time of the year and how much exploration money the company has available to spend. The main thing is whether you want to travel, whether you want to be separated from your friends working on some different continent for 9 or 10 weeks at a time. Raising a family under such circumstances can be difficult.
(8) I see demand for gold exploration increasing (because the gold price is so high). I see demand for uranium exploration increasing (because there wil be a continuing switch from hydrocarbon to nuclear generated power) and hydrocarbon exploration will increase (as there is no established, practical alternative to oil / natural gas for many of its end uses).
As for your final question, can’t comment since I know little about astronomy.
